Soviet Control of Eastern Europe
In 1944-1945, the Red Army battled against the Nazis across Eastern Europe. Stalin was determined that the USSR would control Eastern Europe, so as to prevent Germany or any other nation/state from establishing staging posts for invasion, using countries such as Hungary or Poland. To realize this ambition, Stalin had a simple policy:
Key Points/Significances of Stalin's Policy
Each Eastern European state would have a communist government loyal to the USSR
Each state's economy would be tied to the economy of the USSR
If communist control was threatened, each state could use its own army or secret police, or call on the Red Army for help
The Warsaw pact of 1955 bound all of the Eastern European states closely to the USSR
Division of Europe by the Warsaw Pact
